For her Whisper Residency, Sophia will create an installation that focuses on the use of text messages to highlight individual memories in this digital age.
Temporality of individual memory has lead to the waning of subjectivities and Sophia’s installation will reference Milan Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being in which she suggests that life is unbearably light when it has no memories and traces in it, yet the act of writing could be a temporary remedy for the malady of our time, which is amnesia. This interactive installation will provide a metaphor for those neglected memories and hopefully enable people to reflect upon the temporal.
As part of her installation Sophia is inviting people to write down a selection of text messages stored in their phones memory. Sophia is keen on the randomness of texts, from lewd personal texts to trivial appointments. Over her 2 week residency Sophia will create a monument to the re-experience of writing in the digital age.
