I am currently trying to reintroduce some old fashioned inventiveness into my practice in an attempt to alter the remit of the tight dialogue I have been working within. I am exacerbating the tension between this dialogue’s two main components, i.e., the dynamic between the qualities of a painted image, and the qualities of the physical structure this representational surface occupies. This dialogue has, in the past, formulated itself as objects consisting of a painted 3D surface, and an accompanying wooden understructure. These works explored the boundary delineating 2D and 3D work, and each piece of work has its own leaning with respect to this demarcation. Currently, the painting still exists to inform and resolve the structure, but is less visually domineering. Paint’s role in the overall equation is changing, situating itself more on a par with the other materials in my work, and less as a mode of representation. By proxy, this means that the painting is increasingly at the mercy of the physical properties of the surface it occupies. Hopefully this allows a more connected engagement of the disparate elements that came together to formulate a work. This re-thinking of the role of painting is also occurring with the role of the wooden understructures. Their interaction with the picture plain is under assessment in current work. Parallel to these concerns, I am attempting to take into consideration the overall aesthetic qualities of the work and am introducing new materials into the work that push the overall aesthetic in new directions.
