“We are not in the Museum”
Photography by Zhu Ying
24 May – 15 July 2008

The photographs shown here are part of a collaboration between Zhu Ying and Yan Jun titled We are not in the Museum. The project reflects the artists’ interest in everyday life in the city, with the aim of exploring and rethinking the relationship between human beings and their environments.

Around Qiu Jiang Lu in Shanghai there are markets for cheap electronics, computer hardware and second-hand machines. The area is full of music and sounds, contrasts between loud and quiet places, hills of electromechanical components, with a monorail line passing overhead.

I like to walk these streets and observe the trivial happening through my camera lens. It is an emotional experience, which makes me realise that this is an amazing city in which I grew up….

Zhu Ying

Zhu Ying was born in Shanghai and lives in London and Shanghai. She is currently studying for an MA in Curating Contemporary Design at Kingston University, London.

CHINA INCIDENTAL (Un)familiar Territories is a project which presents a slice of contemporary China which is not seen but heard. Chinese sound artists Yan Jun and Hitlike have captured sounds from their everyday lives in Shanghai and Harbin respectively to create a special headphone walk linked to locations on a walk around Manchester city centre. The works transport the listener to the streets, market places and meeting places of China as they experience familiar places in unfamiliar ways.

CHINA INCIDENTAL (Un)familiar Territories is part of CHINA NOW, the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture.
