11 October – 11 November 2004
Shu Yang is an artist and independent curator based in Beijing. In 2000, with two other Performance artists, Shu Yang organised the first performance art Festival in China, the DaDao (Shocker) Live Art Festival. For this years event Shu Yang invited 20 International Live Artists to the festival and he is keen to develop links with other Live Arts Practitioners from around the world.
For his residency at Chinese Arts Centre, Shu Yang will research Live Art in the UK and meet artists based in Manchester and the UK, with the hope of finding more performance artists to be included in the DaDao festivals. He will also perform live art works in the Project Space and make a new performance to be previewed during our Birthday celebrations on the 2nd December.
The Performance: Living Under the Flag
Shu Yang’s performance is centred on the flag of Chinese Communist Party. Shu Yang remembers a great number of the official Communist party songs from his childhood and growing up and these will be incorporated into his performance. The presence of the Communist Party is like a parent, and is actually called ‘mother’. Children are forced to believe that the Communist Party is the only rightful party in China, and it is extremely dangerous to go against this. Shu Yang believes that China has a low political civilisation because of living under one party and the flag. These ideas form the basis of Shu Yang’s performance, which incorporates visuals and sound.
As part of the Liverpool Biennial Shu Yang will be performing at the Bluecoat Arts Centre. For more information visit Bluecoat Gallery
