Philippa Hadley Choy, The Adulteress, plaster, 2008
3 October – 22 December 2008
Open Studio 18 – 22 December 2008
British Chinese sculptor Philippa Hadley Choy has been working intensely during her two month residency on a new series exploring the pure idea of sculpture with references to Italian Baroque master Bernini and Chinese cultural and artistic tradition.
Choy’s work is underpinned by conceptual concerns, but is laced with a canny humour. Bernini’s exquisite drapery, the role of mountains in Chinese artistic tradition and feet all collide in Choy’s new works. For her Open Studio she presents a video work, bright etched plaster drawings as the backdrop to a forest of corporal sculptures.
