Eric Fong is a London-based visual artist and former physician. He was born in Hong Kong and was educated in Canada and the UK, completing his Fine Art Masters at Goldsmiths. Eric’s practise uses sculpture, photography and video to explore biomedical and cultural issues; his recent works have developed from collaborations with people in the local communities.
For his residency at Chinese Arts Centre Eric will conduct research into a new project based on the theme of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its relationship to consumerism. TCM is an Asian system of healing that focuses on achieving internal balance and its practitioners use methods such as acupuncture, heat application, herbal preparations and exercises to restore the flow of qi and the balance of yin and yang. Eric questions the increasing popularity of these treatments and his project aims to consider whether this is due to a lack of faith in modern western medicine, greater cultural diversity or the exotification and glorification of ethnic consumerism.
During his residency at Chinese Arts Centre, Eric will develop his practise in the area of socially-engaged work by interacting with the Chinese community in Manchester. His aim through research and development, is to build a collection of visual material that will initiate his studio practise.
