Interval II is a beautiful video installation by Suki Chan exploring human traces within two contrasting types of architecture. Using time-lapse to capture the movement of light and shadows, Chan juxtaposes footage of a cast iron pier off the coast of northwest England and a traditional Hakka roundhouse in southwest China. This poetic film installation combines sound, moving image and light to transport the viewer to a place between reality and imagination, inviting us to slow down and contemplate our relationship to the built environment.

Join us for private view of Interval II by Suki Chan on Thursday 9 October
5.30 – 7.30pm

21 : Discussions with artists of Chinese descent in the UK

cover_small1.jpgThe private view of Interval II is also the launch of a new publication by Chinese Arts Centre, 21 : Discussions with artists of Chinese descent in the UK, which profiles twenty-one outstanding artists (including exhibiting artist Suki Chan) and examines the development of British Chinese arts through the experiences of the artists and curators that have helped shape it. Join us and the artists on Thursday 9 October 5.30 – 7.30pm to celebrate this exciting new book and the work of artists of Chinese descent in the UK.

Breathe Artist Residency
Philippa Hadley Choy
3 October – 22 December

charity_web.jpgThis month we welcome UK-based sculptor Philippa Hadley Choy for a Breathe residency at Chinese Arts Centre. Choy works in plaster to create sculptures which often reinterpret existing works. Recent series have explored the idea and form of mountains in paintings, Chinese mythology and the work of Baroque master Bernini. During her residency Choy will develop a new series responding to the conceptual surroundings of the Centre.

First Step Exhibition
Sin Yi Law
15 October – 14 January

Sin Yi Law’s delicate crayon drawings aim to express the beauty of food. The food objects are presented against a white background to emphasise their form with each mark designed to draw up the excitement in the preparation and enjoyment of food. A series of her works will be showing in the First Step space from 15 October.

100% Chinese House by John Dummett and Sophia Yadong Hao
Project Space, Norwich

Until 17 October

This intriguing collaboration project by Yadong Hao (a participating artist in Vital 06 & 07), 100% Chinese House, presents us with a hypothetical living room which is completely furnished with objects ‘made in China’. This hypothetical but possible room explores the tension between what we hold close to us and consider as home, its actual origins and the individuals involved in its manufacture. Email Project Space for more information.
