Sally Lai appointed Chinese Arts Centre’s new CEO
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Sally Lai as Chinese Arts Centre’s new CEO. Sally was Chinese Arts Centre’s first curator from 2002 to 2005. She has extensive experience in the arts having worked in a number of creative consultant and in curatorial roles including working for Arts Council England and firstsite. Sally was a fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme in 2005/06. We look forward to Sally starting in December and leading Chinese Arts Centre into the future.
Interval II – Suki Chan
Until 22 December 2008
Escape from the city centre bustle and be transported by Suki Chan’s beautiful film installation Interval II. This new 17 minute work juxtaposes footage of an English cast iron pier and a traditional Hakka roundhouse in southwest China. Using time-lapse to capture the movement of light from night to day, Chan presents a sensitive and poetic portrait of the human traces in these significant structures.
Breathe Resident Artist – Philippa Hadley Choy
Open Studio 18 – 22 December
Resident artist Philippa Hadley Choy has transformed the studio into a plaster sculpture workshop and has been working intensely creating new works which play with the pure idea of sculpture with a focus on Italian Baroque master Bernini, drapery and feet… Make a note of the open studio next month to see the finished works and find out more.
First Step Exhibition – Sin Yi Law

Sin Yi is a recent graduate whose work explores food and food culture. Her delicate crayon drawings currently showing in the First Step space attempt to draw up the excitement in the preparation and enjoyment of food.

Gayle Chong Kwan – The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour is a series of exhibitions presenting new work by Gayle Chong Kwan. Atlantis is an enormous mythical landscape, a city created and carved out of semi-opaque used plastic food packaging, collected from people who live in London and covering the entire exhibition space. As our curator, a practising artist and editor of two Chinese Arts Centre publications Ying has a thorough and broad understanding of contemporary Chinese arts. The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art

The inaugural exhibition at the new Saatchi Gallery is a large collection of new and recent works by some of the leading Chinese artists. This mammouth show of mostly paintings features works by Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun and Fang Lijun.
