The festive season is upon us and we have a Christmas art evening treat, gift ideas and last chance to catch Interval II.
Philippa Hadley Choy
Open Studio Evening
Thursday 18 December 5 – 7pm

Philippa Hadley Choy has been working intensely during her time here. Plaster, plastic sheeting, photos, photocopying and a less than pristine studio have all been part of the process. Playing with the idea of pure sculpture with references to Bernini, mountains in Chinese art and feet, Choy has created a video work, bright etched plaster drawings and a forest of sculptures. Join us for a guided tour through her unique art practice over a mince pie and refreshments on Thursday 18 December 5 – 7pm.
Philippa’s open studio continues 18 – 22 December 2008

Interval II – Suki Chan
Until 22 December 2008
This month is your last chance to catch Suki Chan’s mesmerising film Interval II. Chan’s poetic portrait of a cast iron pier on the coast of northwest England and a traditional Hakka roundhouse uses time-lapse to show the movement of shadows and light. The 17 minute film beautifully captures the traces of human presence in the structures. Catch it before it closes 22 December.
First Step Exhibition
Sin Yi Law
Until 14 January 2009
Sin Yi Law’s delicate crayon drawings exploring the excitement and pleasure of food are complemented by a video work projected in the First Step space. Sin Yi projects footage of rice cakes opening with Chinese characters meaning crude words. The words oppose the pleasant language associated with food conversation, highlighting the social communicative aspect of food in Chinese culture.
