Contemporary arts leadership network

We are looking for ten people of Chinese descent who are, or want to be, leaders in contemporary arts. You might want to run your own dance company, be a senior curator in a national institution or become the CEO of a regional Arts Centre – or simply become influential in your role as an artist. We would expect you to have at least five years professional experience, though this may be completing a PhD for example.Chinese Arts Centre has received funding from Cultural Leadership Programme to establish a network of Chinese arts leaders. The network will be facilitated by Chinese Arts Centre between June 2007–April 2008, it will then be up to network members if they choose to continue. This is a pilot scheme and so it can be shaped and tailored to your needs. We will be providing training and the administration, but the network will essential be self supporting and so members need to be committed to help their peers.Core elements of the programme:

  • We are working with the Management Centre to deliver a tailor made, intensive training session on management skills and leadership development.
  • The group will become its own action learning set, relying on each other to teach and share skills to resolve an individual’s problem.
  • Each participant will be required to develop their own learning programme; starting with where they are in their careers and where they want to be in ten years, and then working with Chinese Arts Centre to begin making that plan a reality.
  • Visits to venues to meet staff, see new work and discuss specific elements such as interpretation, staff structure, customer care, etc.

To enable you to participate we will provide an expenses budget of £500 for each participant. If appropriate, we will also negotiate for you to carry out a placement or take part in specific training, there is an additional £500 per person to make this happen. We anticipate that full participation in the network will require a minimum commitment of five days, and a maximum of ten.At the end of the ten months all participants are required to deliver a short paper looking at their perceived barriers to becoming an arts leader before they started on the network and how their perception has now changed, including lessons learnt. If you would like to apply to be part of the network please send us your CV and a short covering letter explaining why you would like to take part and how you think it might help your career develop. Please send applications to Sarah Champion at ceo@chinese-arts-centre.orgIf you would like to discuss anything further please call Sarah on 0161 832 7271 or email at the above address.Deadline for submissions is 15th June 2007
