Posted on June 14th, 2011 WHISPER RESIDENCY
Daksha Patel
20 June – 3 July
Open Studio: 2 July
Preview 1 July 5.30-7.30pm
Daksha Patel is a Manchester based artist whose work examines the relationship between subjective and medical models of the human body. After a residency at The Christie Hospital, Manchester in 2010, Daksha’s recent work has been preoccupied with the notions of mapping, networks and systems that exist both within and beyond the body.
For this whisper residency, Daksha will be collaborating with a local acupuncturist to explore the interconnections between her own experiences of this traditional holistic therapy with how she can respond visually as an artist. Using both the experience itself and through ongoing dialogue with the therapist Daksha will be creating a new series of responsive drawings, which will be showcased at her open studio.
If anyone has any previous experience of acupuncture, either as a therapist or client please get in touch to share your thoughts about the project with the artist via email.

Project Space for Gayle Chong Kwan and Stephanie Douet
12 January – 29 January 2011
Open Studio Thursday 27 – 29 January
As part of a major three year project, set up with curator Eliza Gluckman and developed in conjunction with the National Trust and the V&A, Gayle Chong Kwan and Stephanie Douet will be using the residency space to work through ideas for a new collaborative work. The residency period will allow the pair to develop plans for a new large-scale pavilion, which forms part of the major project SINOPTICON: Contemporary Chinoiserie in Contemporary Art. The pavilion will tour to different galleries, venues and grounds throughout the project.
Reflecting upon research which begun at various National Trust properties and at the V&A, the artists will be developing their project as well as meeting academics and architects. In parallel with this, the artists are also each evolving a number of individual new works for the project. The residency will culminate in an open studio, with both artists available to discuss their project to the public on 27 January.
