Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu

BREATHE RESIDENCY

Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu
‘Liu Ding’s Store’ – in conversations
18 May – 15 June
Talk: Wednesday, 15 June 2pm
http://talkbycarollu.eventbrite.com

Liu Ding is an artist and curator from Beijing who will be here for one month to develop his existing project ‘Liu Ding’s store – in conversations’; a project which establishes an area for thinking and discussion centred around the value of art.

Often in response to an exhibition or event Liu Ding has been invited to, the artist would initiate a conversation with the concerned practitioner, whether it is a fellow artist, curator or gallery director.

For the residency period, Liu Ding will be inviting local arts practitioners into the space to engage with the project. The participants of the conversations are always limited: the artist himself, the invited guest and a moderator the artist has invited to act for the conversations. This moderator, played by Carol Yinghua Lu, who is an art critic and curator, will start the conversations by stating the time, date, place, participants present and will explain the concept, rules and formats of the conversations.

Talk by Beijing-based critic and curator Carol Yinghua Lu
Carol is one of China’s most active and dynamic curators and critics. She is on the selection panel for this year’s Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale and will be one of the Co-Artistic Directors of the 2012 Gwangju Biennale. Carol regularly writes for a number of journals including Frieze, Contemporary and Today Art and is co-editor of Contemporary Art & Investment magazine.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to find out more about contemporary practice in China and to hear about a curatorial project she is developing with artist Liu Ding.
Places are free but booking highly recommended.

Breathe – Wu Chi-tsung

Breathe Residency

Wu Chi-tsung
4 October – 29 November
Open Studio 25 – 28 November

Our up-coming Breathe artist in residence, Taiwanese Wu Chi-tsung, is fascinated by images, both by how they are made and how we see them. Working mostly in installation, video and photography he experiments with and manipulates these artistic media. He explores in a playful manner with the processes of still and moving image, creating a series of works which seem to echo the past. While alluding to the tradition of classical Chinese painting his work is based on resolutely contemporary technologies both digital and analogue.

During his residency here Wu Chi-tsung will be carrying out projects that develop this line of investigation. Using painting and ink drawing as inspiration he will set out to develop new techniques that allow him to capture brushstrokes as moments in time. Wu Chi-tsung will be hoping to work directly with local film and photography students and local artists to develop his ideas and techniques whilst he is here.

Open Studio and Workshops

Wu Chi-tsung will be showcasing the work he has developed during his stay here with an open studio running from 26 – 28 November. There will also be a preview of his showcase on Friday 25 November, to coincide with our Art Auction opening night and so it would be great to see you all there!

As part of Wu Chi-tsung’s artist residency, he has been developing a photographic project based around capturing movement in the cityscapes of Manchester and as part of his Open Studio will be offering a Photography Masterclass on Saturday 27 November. As part of the Masterclass, Chi-tsung is inviting participants to go out in their local environment and using a restricted source of light (such as a torch or flash light) ‘paint’ a scene whilst shooting a long-time exposure at night. The space you choose to shoot in is entirely up to you and all participants will meet at Chinese Arts Centre on the Saturday to share their images and thoughts about the work produced.

As an extra opportunity Chi-tsung will also be running this late night workshop on Friday 26 November, where he will be taking interested participants to a secret location to shoot some images together. These images can also be showcased at Saturday’s Masterclass (see Masterclass workshop for details).
This project is being delivered with the support of local photography network Red Eye and is open to all amateur and professional photographers!

Eastman Cheng – Open Studio

Eastman Cheng’s recent Open Studio showcased a selection of work created in reposnse to her three and a half month residency here at Chinese Arts Centre. Eastman spent her residency time immersing herself in the local arts scene and with it was able to make work as a response to the Manchester culture, architecture and the city’s general energy levels! Her observations as a foreigner to British culture resulted in the series Gymnasium,  consisting of humourous,  bright soft sculptures which for Eastman represented the local environment she had witnessed during her stay here.

It was a great pleasure to work with Hong Kong based artist Eastman Cheng, and we hope to develop further projects with her at some point in the future.
