Memento - Ed Pien
24 April - 4 July 2009

Ed Pien - Memento @ Chinese Arts CentreMemento is a walk-through installation and consists of ropes, cut silhouettes, sound and video. The hand tied configuration alludes to fishing nets, traps, security fences and engulfing waves. The network of patterns is also reminiscent of the human circulatory system, passageways and maps. The video shown within the structure depicts the artist negotiating the might of churning waves emphasizing human beings’ vulnerability as well as celebrating their strength to confront and overcome difficulty.More details>>>’

Breathe Artist in Residence
Jessica Tsang
21 May - 21 August 2009
Open Studio: - 15 - 21 August
Jessica’s website

Jessica Tsang - Towerblock, 2008Moving between materials, Jessica Tsang has made works that combine sculptural forms and the painted surface. Jessica’s work focuses on the dynamic between the painted image, and the qualities of the physical structure this representational surface occupies. This dialogue formulates itself as objects consisting of a painted 3D surface, and an accompanying wooden structure where the work explores the boundaries between 2D and 3D work. Jessica is attempting to take into consideration the overall aesthetic qualities of the work by introducing new materials that push the overall aesthetic in new directions. Through her residency at the European Centre of Ceramics she has been able to experiment with new materials and her experiences with ceramics will impact upon her residency at Chinese Arts Centre.More details>>>

EventsBreathe Artist-in-Residence Programme, Chongqing

In collaboration with Chinese Arts Centre, 501 Artspace will open their residency programme to all artists. 6 artists will be selected for 2010. Artists can select their duration of stay between 1 – 2 months. The cost of the residency will be £500 and will cover studio, accommodation and staff support. The artists will be expected to cover the costs of travel and living expenses.

The Breathe residency is an opportunity to provide an artist the time and space to contemplate their practise. It is not necessary that the artist makes finished work during this period and we will not pressure the artist to do this. The time could be used for research and development of ideas, and the form the residency takes is entirely up to the artist to choose.

The deadline for application is 31 August 2009.

First Step Exhibition
Andrew Lim
6 May - 9 September 2009

Andrew Lim - Lifting to WrapAndrew Lim devises and follows rules for the creation of structures that respond to the architecture and history of sites. He uses objects that have a historical connection to the site in which they are situated, such as objects from the building’s former use or discarded elements found within the building. By establishing rules for expanding the works the final form of the structure is determined by the structure itself.
