Chinese Arts Centre is excited to announce a new initiative, The People's Residency. The scheme gives the public an opportunity to select who we have here as artist-in-residence in Spring/Summer 2012, provides a unique insight into the residency process and access to exclusive events.

Firststep Showcase

Jeremy Hutchison
Err
14 January – 12 May 2012

Jeremy HutchisonIn January 2011, Jeremy Hutchison sent an email to factories all over the world. He wanted to know what happens when you lodge an error in the 'smooth wheels of globalisation'. Err is a project developed as part of Jeremy's MA Degree show at Slade, London.

The works represent a collection of objects, made by individual factory workers with a specific design fault of their own choice. From the 17 collected objects, 6 were made in China. The First Step Space will showcase these individually crafted objects along with their creators' details, raising issues of miscommunication, function and dysfunction, and mass-production verses the unique.
Free Life Friendly Event

Interactive Talk by Dr. Roger Mason
Date: Wednesday, 1 February 2012
Time: 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

As part of our Life Friendly events in February, we are delighted to have Dr. Roger Mason as our first guest speaker here at the centre.

Dr. Roger Mason is an English geologist and professor of metamorphic petrology, and he is a patron of the 5 Elements Partnership He is the discoverer of Ediacaran fossils. He is now a professor at the China University of Geosciences at Wuhan. Mason's discovery was significant because it is the first fossil that was ever described that came from undoubted Precambrian rocks. Until this point the Precambrian was thought to be completely devoid of fossils and consequently possibly of life.

As a geologist Dr. Mason views the development of human society with the massive scale of geological time.

Dr. Roger Mason will be sharing his research and from his view point looking at 'The Earth' will link his research to potential practical methods which could be utilised as artists and art organisations for a more sustainable method of practice.

This is free, there are limited tickets available, please reserve your tickets via the link below:
